This novella was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You!

Aetina, “Goddess of Pain, Anger and Darkness” is the daughter of Zeus and Nyx the Goddess of Night. She is a forgotten god and living in present day New York. Her fellow forgotten god friend Sjorn asks her to join a support group for forgotten gods run by Chi. Aetina and Aphrodite have been feuding. Zeus chose Aphrodite as his favorite over Aetina and Aphrodite wants Aetina dead. It seems so funny to me that gods and goddesses are living mundane existences, working dead end jobs, microwaving popcorn and watching t.v. This is a really clever concept and it is well written. This was a really cute story and it made me smile. 4 stars.

Kasey-ray, Erin's sister is trying to find her gift though Erin is convinced that she probably doesn't have one. Erin is trying to figure out what she wants to do after high school. 14 year-old Kasey-ray is getting close to 19 year-old Justin and Erin doesn't approve. Erin finds her great grandmother's diary dated 1938 saying Dr Hammersmith was conducting tests on her. Erin wants to find the child that has telepathy, her great grandmother's power. Erin is also trying really hard to control her own fire starter powers. There is a lot of teenage angst in this one as Erin deals with jealousy in her relationship with Sean and her protectiveness towards Kasey-ray and her relationship with Justin. The group of kids with powers increases. And even though Erin is no longer being bullied there is still drama at her school to contend with. This was a really good continuation of Erin's story. I can't wait for another installment. 5 stars.

This book was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You.

I feel like I know zombies pretty well. I own a copy of the Zombie Survival Guide. I have watched every episode of the Walking Dead. I've watched a Romero movie or four. I know that you aim for the head. And I know you need to get out of the cities but don't take the roads. So do I feel confident that I would survive a zombie apocalypse? Naw. I wouldn't last a week.

Days with the Undead: Book One is a journal of survival. It begins on day 3 and ends on day 31. There is an ER doctor, a forensic pathologist, a sniper, an intelligence officer, and an environmental scientist. They are all zombie fans and zombie survivalists. Weapons experience, an expert in edible plants, a map collector and “a mechanical and technological junkie”. “...just a group of people trying to stay alive.”

Like I said before, I like a good zombie story. I like the saga of the fight for survival. Days with the Undead had a really good description of the zombie outbreak as told by the ER doctor. I liked how each character had a story to tell about their life, their sacrifices, their mistakes and their pain. They were each sympathetic and I liked them all. Crazy stuff was happening with the outbreak and each day the narrator asks for her readers to pray and fight for the living. The group doesn't really have a plan. They just want to go somewhere safe. They move from Canada to the United States and back to Canada while the narrator searches the internet for a safe place and posts her journal entries. This is a well written zombie tale with unique elements. 4 stars.

Composed in Blood by Cindy Sprigg Review ~Kami

Composed in Blood

by

This book was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You.

It has been awhile since I have read any Horror. My interest in books spans all genres. I used to read only Fantasy and Science Fiction, then I read only Stephen King, then I started reading Romance, but only Paranormal Romance, recently I started reading more Contemporary Romance. I also like reading YA, especially YA Dystopian. So now I feel like my reading interests have gone full circle back to Horror. I should pick up some Science Fiction/Fantasy while I am it. I used to be a fan of scary movies too, and I guess I still am though I haven't watched any in awhile. Slasher movies aren't something you can watch too many of with a small child in the house. I think a good horror tale should have just enough of the creepy and macabre to draw you in and keep you there quivering in terror until it's over. A good horror story makes you jump at strange noises in the night. A good horror story is something you remember long after you've finished reading it. Cindy Sprigg's book drew me in with the very first line and didn't let go.

The son of an incestuous relationship, Tommy lives in a shack surrounded by the bodies of his dead grandparents. Tommy was horribly abused by his grandmother and he grows up to be a crazed killer. A down on his luck writer, Jake, finds a body and thinks he may be on the verge of finding a really great, scary story. Jake is drawn into Tommy's madness. “The novel was now telling him he must supply victims to feed the boy, to feed it. The novel was everything; the story was his soul.”

The writing in this book is amazing. It is descriptive and full of tension. The pacing is perfect. “A tale designed to make the reader both afraid to turn the page, but at the same time afraid not to.” The story is twisted, messed up, bloody and scary. But it is also kind of sad. I feel sympathetic towards poor, crazy, killer Tommy. If you like Silence of the Lambs, Dexter, Psycho, or Saw than you will appreciate Composed in Blood. The dynamic between Jake and Tommy also reminded me of the 2006 movie Bug with Ashley Judd, based on a play, about the disorder where one person is drawn into another person's delusion.

The book is amazingly terrifying and after reading it you may need to sleep with a light on. Tommy and Max's story is one full of pain, blood and death. And Jake's descent into madness is seriously twisted. There is so much going on in this book. Sprigg seamlessly collects several fragments and weaves them into a whole. Thank you for this amazingly, disturbed, twisted tale, oh Mistress of the Macabre. After reading it all I could think was 'Wow'. 5 stars.

Cover Spotlight!

Cover Spotlight: Dynasty O' Shea by Clarissa Cartharn

Cover:

Summary:
The Kingdom of Gammalon is taken siege by evil Lord Dravidor of Dark Vale. Its army has been driven out of the kingdom and now seeking refuge in the caves of Mount Kiznon. Their only hope lies in a man that lives in a different world- the present. Jack O'Shea, the crown prince of Gammalon takes refuge in the present world upon directions by the General of the Gammalonian Army as they seek to reinforce soldiers and weapons after a gruesome battle with the Dark Vale army. Stuck in the present world for eighteen years, he has never spoken of his heritage to his children. So when he is recalled to save Gammalon, he least expects that his four children will be journeying with him to the World of Spassenia. As they cross the gates of dimensions, they enter a world unlike they've ever known-one where magic and power prevail over all who live in it. With perils at every turn they take, they must seek the alliance of the mythical shadow warriors of the Hans Xian to win the war against Dravidor.

Reviews:

1. This a family fantasy adventure in the tradition of Narnia. There is everything you could wish for in the story and from the characters, including the air of mystery surrounding the O'Sheas. Very well written, this story hooks you in right from the start with the promise of strange things to come. The fantasy spans worlds and provides endearing animal characters and beings from myth and legend in a great adventure. There is such a lot happening in the story that it keeps you turning the pages, right up until the very satisfying and magical ending.

2. I love Spassenia! This new world the O'Shea family are transported to is so complete. It's full of different worlds and awesome characters within Spassenia itself. Fordyce the Centaur is my favourite because he is a guardian figure to the family. Also there's Lhao Xing (sorry I'm horrible at spelling) the warrior Panther and Hue Bella the witch. So you have a well rounded supporting cast of characters that are there to help out the O'Sheas against the villain Dravidor. From the moment they are arrive in Spassenia each of the O'Shea character learns about their unique set of skills. I din' t want to give too much away! It is an incredible first novel from Clarissa Cartharn. I want her to make it a series so we don't have to say goodbye to the characters. I recommend this book to all ages! Everyone should take a teip to Spassenia!

3. When I was first given this book as a gift, I was instantly captivated by its cover. I knew that I was in for a ride. I loved every minute of the plot. Totally exciting, with an healthy amount of twists and turns to keep you going. Often than not, you are given a "so Called fantasy" book to read but this one meets the challenge. In addition, the mystery hidden in the various plots make for a nice twist... I was totally captivated from the very first page till the end. I want more... I need more... At the risk of giving the story away, I love the various worlds depicted in the story. Oh, how I wished I was in one of the worlds... But then again, the author's use of language transported me into the worlds. The witch was indeed spooky, the description is just enough to get me on the edge. As depicted by the book cover, Dynasty O'Shea, the Throne of Gammalon is a true Gem in the fantasy world. I look forward to reading a sequel. Bravo! This is truly a keeper. You will enjoy it.

Clarissa Cartharn:

Clarissa Cartharn has always had a deep love for language. Her pursuit of it has led her to attain a BA majoring in English Language and Literature, sought a career in English teaching for six years before finally becoming a lawyer. But when she took up the pen, she realised what she was really desiring for was the cathartic release of her wild imaginations via writing.
Clarissa is interested in learning new languages and is currently on a quest on conquering Mandarin Chinese. Her quirky sense of humour and love for language, culture and people are fortunately shared by her husband, and two children."Dynasty O'Shea" is her first novel.

Camille White is wearing an angel costume the Friday before Christmas trying to flag down a cab while it starts to snow. The cabbie is surly but attractive. Matt is a serious woman hater. Camille had hoped for a promotion and a deeper personal relationship with her boss, who she had been sleeping with for a year, at the office Christmas party. This is a short, clever, romantic, erotic story. These are two people who have been burned. Camille still believes in love and Matt decides to hate all women. But they are instantly attracted to each other. Then they get stuck in the snow and they find hope in each other. I really liked this a lot. It was fun and made me smile. 5 stars.

Erin the fire goddess:The beginning

by

I was gifted this book by the author for an honest review. Thank You!

15-year-old Erin is moving to her parents' hometown of Galladale. Erin is used to being the social pariah because she has a birthmark on her face. I was feeling really sorry for all the ridicule she had to endure. She is bullied by mean girl Jessica for crushing over a boy, Sean. Jessica warns Erin to stay away from Sean but she keeps bumping into him at the movie rental place on Fridays, her family's movie night. One Friday Erin has a severe reaction after seeing Sean, passes out and sleeps for three days. Things start getting a little strange after that. “You are my fire and I am your water” “...whenever someone died the child born on that day would inherit their powers, even if not blood related” This was a really well written story and I was enjoying it a lot. I would like to read the next book about Erin. 4 stars.

My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers #2) by Rachel Vincent Review ~Kami

My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers #2)

by

This is the sequel to My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers #1) where Kaylee discovered she is a bean sidhe or commonly referred to as banshee. She does a lot of wailing when someone is about to die. I got this off of wikipedia: "The banshee (pron.: /ˈbænʃiː/ ban-shee), from Irish: bean sí [bʲæn ˈʃiː] ("woman of thesídhe" or "woman of the fairy mounds") is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. In legend, a banshee is a fairy woman who begins to wail if someone is about to die” Kaylee and Nash have been dating for 6 weeks and are at a concert. Nash's brother, Tod the reaper used to date a singer Addison Page who doesn't have a soul because she sold it to a demon. Harmony, Nash's mother is teaching Kaylee how to control her wail. This story is about the dark side of child stardom and soul trafficking. It totally makes sense to me that celebrities sell their soul for fame and fortune. Since Nash is 18 and Kaylee is 16, I think if Kaylee does give it up to him, he would be guilty of statutory rape. Also, I didn't think Kaylee should be driving and talking on her cell phone. Doesn't she know that is dangerous? Such a thing is illegal in Oregon, maybe not in Texas. Kaylee is having a hard time juggling school, work and bean sidhe business. She is trying to save someone's soul and her dad grounds her for being home late, guess she should have called him. This series is really good and I want to read the rest of it. 5 stars.

The Demon Lover (Fairwick Chronicles #1) by Carol Goodman, Juliet Dark (Pseudonym) Review ~Kami

The Demon Lover (Fairwick Chronicles #1)

by Carol Goodman , Juliet Dark (Pseudonym)

This book was gifted to me by the publisher, Random House . Thank You.

26-year-old Callie has written a book about demon lovers. She has always loved fairy tales and Gothic literature. She has a doctorate and teaches a class on vampires. Callie starts having dreams and visions of an incubus coming to her, an entity she has seen since she was a child who she called 'the fairytale prince'. While interviewing for a teaching position in a quaint New England town called Fairwick “a landlocked village in the Catskill Mountains”, Callie finds Honeysuckle House, a five bedroom Victiorian house, where a Gothic Romance writer Dahlia LaMotte used to live. Dahlia frequently wrote about demon lovers. Callie is offered the position of assistant professor of English and Folklore and buys Honeysuckle House. Boxes of Dahlia's notebooks are in the attic and there is a mysterious locked drawer in the desk. Callie immediately clashes with the American History professor Frank Delmarco. A strange foreign girl, Mara Marinca wants to take Callie's class so that she can learn to confront evil. Callie keeps meeting all these strange characters in the town and the professors at the college are really strange. Fiona Eldritch resembles the fairy queen in a painting. Soheila Lilly seems to be freezing in a warm room even though she is wearing layers of cashmere. Callie's handyman Brock seems to heal her with his touch. “I'd discovered that the man in my erotic dreams was a real incubus, that my boss was a witch and my next door neighbor an ancient deer fairy. My colleagues were demons, witches, and fairies. My favorite student was under a curse that was going to ruin her life.” This book is a Gothic, mysterious, romantic and erotic fairy tale and I was getting a kick out of it. 5 stars.
Review of Iron & Wine (the iron World Series book 1) by Candace Osmond

When I was first given this book to read I thought the name was a little different and some what odd but once you read it you'll understand the meaning and the name stands out....this mystical/fantasy book has fairies, sprites, vampires and every other creature in between. The main character is Avery a human girl whose off to college in the city and moving in with her best friend Jules. Although the beginning gives you some background on Avery's life; past and present you don't get the full gist and other surprises until she's off to college and her life drastically changes, nothing is what it seems and no one is who you think they are . Out comes an array of characters that are all unique and very much keep you interested. This author has such a amazing imagination full of such detail you feel yourself in this magical place with these mystical creatures. Love Lattie so cute shes my favorite....luckily for us there is a number two coming out. Would definitely recommend this book especially if you enjoy fantasy/mystical stories with light romance.

Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed #11) by Lara Adrian Review ~Kami

Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed #11)

by

I was gifted an ARC of this book from the publisher. Expected publication: February 26th 2013 by Delacorte Press . Thank You!

It has been 20 years since the vampires came out to humanity. Mira is an adult now and warrior of the Order. She is a breedmate, yet she is leader of a unit of Breed. I have read all the Midnight Breed books up to this one, and this is a new direction of the series: Breed, the next generation. If you haven't read any Midnight Breed books, this would be a good one to start with. 8 years ago, Kellan, Mira's lover, supposedly died in a fire. I was enjoying seeing the grown-up Nathan, Lucan's son Darion, and Dante's son Xander Raphael (Rafe). Mira gets in trouble for attacking a human and is given baby sitting duty for genius human Jeremy Ackmeyer. Lucan has his hands full trying to keep the peace between humans and the Breed. There are human hate groups attacking, protesting and killing the Breed. Lucan has gone from warrior to politician. Mira could be kicked out of the Order for her actions. And then things start getting interesting. Kellan had been hiding a secret from Mira. Once Kellan and Mira are reunited things between them start getting complicated, romantic and erotic. This story was so good. I loved how it all came together in the end. Amazing. 5 stars.

Thumped (Bumped #2) by Megan McCafferty Review ~Kami

Thumped (Bumped #2)

by

This is the sequel to Bumped. There is a virus that stops women from reproducing sometime between 18 and 20 years old. Teenage girls are encouraged to 'bump' or get pregnant and continue the species. “...most prolific, eighteen-year-old, Zorah Harding, sadly announced that the Virus had finally claimed her uterus and she would not be delivering baby number eleven after all.” Melody is a professional surrogate who was contracted at 13-years-old. For some reason artificial insemination doesn't work and girls have to get pregnant the old fashioned way. Kind of The Handmaid's Tale but they are teenage girls. Harmony lives in the religious commune in Goodside, her twin Melody lives in Otherside. Harmony is pregnant with twins fathered by professional sperminator Jondoe. Harmony is married to Ram who is gay. Melody is also pretending to be pregnant with twins. She is in love with Zen, who she could never 'bump' with because he was too short and not aesthetically pleasing enough to father her child for sale. But now Zen has grown four inches and now can freelance. “He's a free agent. … He can sperminate anyone he wants to.” Melody, Jondoe and Ram rush to Harmony's side to rescue her from the Elders of Goodside. “They love their God and they love their guns. They will shoot you first and pray for forgiveness later.” This is a well written, quick read with a disturbing subject that takes the idea of idolizing teenage pregnancy a step further. I was liking this one a lot more than I liked the first book. 4 stars.
